Yes - because those BIOSes were found only on i386 and some i486 machines.
Modern (3.* and 4.*) kernels simply wouldn't boot on that hardware.

Normally, the machine running GNU/Linux should have at least three separate
filesystems (with different mount options): / (defaults), /var (noexec,nodev)
and /home (nosuid,nodev).
