Etching lines on any transparent material placed in the focal plane is not
a good idea because all sorts of unsightly things eventually get deposited
on the surface.
I once made crosshairs from spider web strands. Black widow web seemed best
for strength and body. At the time I happened to live in So. California
where these were found in great abundance among the geraniums.
This was before the days of LED's so a flashlight bulb dimmed almost to
extinction provided the teeny bit of illumination needed for guiding during
long exposures.
