If the 3 of you owned USR Courier V.Everything modems you could see

that your link rate may connect at a certain figure, but has many ways

of changing speeds all the time

(fall forward/fall backward, retrain, speedshift)

99% of the time a USR will conncet at a cetain rate and if you do a

line probe 1 second later, you see that it has trained up one notch.
