Check to see what the settings are in the BWAVE386.VMC
It is a plain text file with all the instruction in it.

Mine are:

MINMEM = 512
MAXMEM = 2048
VIRTUALSIZE = 2048
SWAPNAME C:\BW\TMP\BWAVE386.SWP
DELETESWAP

Try putting a " ! " in front of:
VIRTUALSIZE
SWAPNAME
DELETESWAP
to make them inactive.

The way BBS messaging has slumped off, the majority of people would
have no problems using the DOS version of the program.

Back in BBSing heyday, it was nice to be able to download a large
number of echoes, and be able to open all of them at once, rather
then split them up into smaller packets for download, so the DOS
version wouldn't choke when it ran out of RAM.
