JD> JD> I can't buy that either. Mercury has Mariner.... for it's cheaper
[Evinrude/Johnson/Mercury/Mariner]
John, I just happened to come across the above message and am not sure
of its origin, however...for the record.
Johnson and Evinrude outboards are manufactured by the same company
(OMC - Outboard Marine Corp), and are identical through out all of their
mechanical components. In past years, there was a difference in the
design of the control box ie "Evinrude" used a push button setup for the
electric shift whereas "Johnson" used a single lever setup that had the
shift switch incorporated within the control box. There were some other
differences that existed way back then, but not now.
The engines have no list price difference, and any price difference is a
situation that exists at the dealer level. In years past, OMC had a Fair
Trade rule whereas absolutely none of their engines could be offered at
a price other than what OMC had set. If a dealer discounted any engine
during the "Old" days, he stood a chance of losing his franchise. This,
of course, has changed.
Also in years past, there was a vast difference in the design of the
hood & the pan on which it sat. There may still be a slight difference
in various HP hoods.
The main difference between the two engines is simply "Color". Hope this
provides some insight on the conversation.
