TR> My BBS supports 2400 thru 28.800. It does not support 300-1200.

Okay, I misunderstood your previous message about lock-outs. I don't
think it is simply a matter of investing in a higher speed modem
in the case of many novice Atari users. Just about the only modems for
Atari that do not require any type of interface are 300 and 1200 baud
modems. Many "off-line" Atari owners acquire one of these direct-connect
jobbies and that's how they get on line in the first place. Many of
these types have called my BBS over the years and I still have a couple
300 bauders today. Interfaces are not easy to come by, especially if
you are a novice user. Anything over 9600 baud would also require a more
expensive interface. So it isn't simply a matter of picking up a used
modem (which may not even have a power supply) at a flea market--the
user would also have to acquire a suitable interface and appropriate
cable(s).

Many of these original 300/1200 users have later gotten interfaces
and higher speed modems, but only after a period of time to evaluate
the benefits of telecommunications by calling at lower baud rates for
a trial period. If no one lets them in, then they may give up the idea
altogether and we have lost a potential Atarian in the ever-diminishing
network of Atari users.
