Robert:
The issue of extracting long filenames to a flavor of DOS that
can't use them is one in which there probably is no perfect answer.
Nevertheless, I have two imperfect suggestions. (1) Truncate the name
to the first 8 characters and the extension to the first 3. (i.e.
AUTOMOTIVE.REPAIR would become AUTOMOTI.REP) Here, I'm assuming both
filename and extension can be longer than they have been in DOS since
I have not even seen Windows 95 in operation let alone learned the
conventions for filenames in Windows 95. If extensions are still 3
characters long, then, obviously, truncating the name would only be
necessary.
(2) On the other hand, it might be helpful to truncate as
indicated in 1 while creating an ASCII file during extraction which
lists the original long filename and the truncated filename for future
reference. Thus, if someone has downloaded an archive with Windows
files having long filenames, and extracts those files to a DOS-only or
Windows-capable system predating Windows 95, they can take those files
and the ASCII list file to work where they have Windows 95 and rename
them appropriately. You might consider writing a small utility that
can reference the list and a specified target disk drive and directory
where matching files are to be found and renamed to their original
long format. You could include CRC information in the list so that the
wrong file of the same name is not renamed due to the user specifying
the wrong target disk and/or directory when running the proposed
utility program.
On another matter: As long as you are headed for XMS memory
swapping, can I get you to consider swap-to-disk where no XMS is
available? I'm thinking in terms of those XTs still floating around in
this world... :-)
