I don't think artificial or pseudo competition is competition.
Spectators expecting a show of competition rather than just a show are shallow.

Even in NASCAR driver skill is only a small part of it.

In those days the best teams ran more cars, and there was even greater
differential between the fast and average. No seatbelts also helps in
driver changeovers...
