Geo. gave the technical answer but not the community answer.
"We", on the whole, are a bunch of folks that got disenfranchised
on CompuServe, specifically CIS:CANOPUS, when Will Zachmann and CIS parted
ways. A number of alternatives sprung up, Delphi being one, but the
semi-public newsgroup news.barkto.com seemed to hit a chord with most of
us. Mainly because newsgroups offered us the off-line abilities that the
CompuServe tools did. Plus Geo. is a most gracious host
