There are just a minor difference: Ukrainian was impacted by Western Slavic
languages, primarily Polish. The most exotic of all Slavic languages are
Lithuanian and Latvian (both are Baltic, or Northern Slavic): while I, being
native Russian, can understand Byelorussian and Ukrainian (easily), Serbian
(almost no problem), Bulgarian (with some effort), Czech and Polish (with
slightly more effort), understanding Latvian or Lithuanian is not that trivial
(they were impacted by several Germanic languages during the Hanseatic League
epoch).
