subject: USR and funny rules

I picked up USR's answer to the Courier for Notebooks yesterday - the
Worldport Dual Standard V.34 PCMCIA Data/Fax Modem.

As with all good imported products, it came with an Australian User's
Manual Addendum.

Rather interesting, at least one of the "obligatory" settings is
different to the Courier's (S0).

                         Advice to Users

---------------------------------------------------------------
COMPLIANCE WARNING
Applications software shall be configured so that no more than 3
attempts are made to establish a connection to a given number
(Note: if the modem can detect service tones, up to 10 attempts
can be made). There must be at least 2 seconds between call
attempts. If the call sequence is unsuccessful, there shall be a
delay of at least 30 minutes before attempting to call the number
again.

Use of the factory defaults will result in the modem being
operated in a non-compliant manner.

Failure to set the modem, and any application software used with
the modem, to the values mention (sic) in the command
restrictions paragraph will result in the modem being operated in
a non-compliant manner. Consequently, there would be no permit in
force for this equipment, and the Telecommunications Act 1991
prescribes a penalty of $12,000 for the connection of non
permitted equipment.

---------------------------------------------------------------
TELEPHONE PORT
The User's Manual refers to the use of a second telephone port on
the modem. This port is not available on your modem.

This product is using a P605 telephone plug.

---------------------------------------------------------------
INTERCONNECTING PORTS
Interconnection circuits should be such that the equipment
continues to comply with the requirements of AS3260 1.2.8.5 for
SELV circuits.

---------------------------------------------------------------
COMMAND RESTRICTIONS
The modem commands shown below have their default values and
range limits set to meet Austel approval requirements. The
settings are different from the ones printed in the User's
Manual.

Cmd. Description Default Range
--------------------------------------------
B Bell/ITU-T B0 B0 only
&G Guard Tone &G2 &G2 only
&P Pulse Dial Ratio &P1 &P1 only
S0 Auto Answer 3 3-5
S6 Pre-Dial Pause 3 2-5
S7 Wait for Carrier 60 20-255
S8 Dial Pulse 2 2-255
S11 Tone Dial Speed 85 70-255

-------------------------------------------------------------------
As you can see, this is a 1996 document and still the second
"phone" port is "disabled" and B1 is not allowed.

I'll make no mention of typos this time :-)
