Could you maybe just clip the lead rope to the middle of the
curb chain, or whatever is it called with the hackamore? This is
how I let Shemmeek graze during his coffee breaks - clip one rein
into his curb chain. (Most times loop the other rein around his
neck and around this new 'lead' to keep him from stepping on it,
and just let go).
I assume you don't ride with a plain bosal and mecate, which
actually does have an extra lead piece tied to the knot at the
bottom, if memory of some past reading serves right.

Lovely dogs they sure are, my aunt used to have some. I wanted
one, too, but then saw some Great Dane puppies (they look very
much like Boxer pups) and that was the end of it - or I should say
the start - 24 years ago. The latest in line is just 11 weeks old
today, and he is about 4 or 5 times great-son of my first Dane girl.
All the previous ones are in the happy hunting grounds now (we
were dogless since Septembe last, an awful long time to wait).
However, in 1990, we had two males, father and son, to join us on
a pack horse trip with an outfitter in the Rockies south of
Calgary in Alberta. The trotted along behind me (last of the
string), never bothered any animals, tame or wild, and barked
only once, upon hearing the outfitter try his elk calling gizmo
for the first time.
Compared to Boxers, Danes are more sedate and "dignified"
. I hope this one (his name is Sheriff) will be as good,
and join me on some trails. From the middle of the prairies, I
envy you your landscape!
Regards Emil
