Just an addendum to that point. For my major project for my CS
degree I had to (in a group of 11 students) write a client server
application to query a database with an X-windows user interface. One
of the first things that we did was to compile GCC on the target
platform (HP Precision Architecture RISC based UNIX work-stations) as
the compiler that shipped with the systems wouldn't work with the GUI
design tools.
GCC compiled code produced by 2 different GUI design tools, it
linked with object code produced by an Ada compiler (both Ada calling
C and C calling Ada).
We couldn't get the HP C compiler to do any of this (I'm sure it
would have been possible, but we just didn't have enough time - it was
easier to spend a couple of weeks getting GCC installed). Also the HP
C compiler produced warnings when you used ANSI C (it only liked K&R
C).
GCC ships with NextStep as the default (only?) C compiler for that
OS.
