That depends on what you intend to compromise on. The first thing you
have to remember about politics is that there is no such thing as a
final victory or a final defeat. As long as your compromise doesn't
preclude going to battle again, you haven't given up anything essential.
That means that you have to sit down and determine what your essential
position is and measure all of your political activity against that
standard.
The problem with politics is that too many people wind up with their
essential position boiled down to "*I* must retain my political power."
Such people are willing to sell out anybody and sacrifice anything else
to retain their power.
Sometimes, you *do* have to take a no compromise position, even when you
can't win, because it's the only way to keep your core values intact. At
least with a solid core, you have something left to build on when you go
to battle again. Abandoning your core values leaves you with battling
over power alone.
