I'd take one side, usually the concave side and start grinding. If you
don't feel you have enough dental stone, get some fine sand and you can put
about 20% by weight into that dental stone if needed but the stone will be
a bit weaker and less resistant to shattering.  It would be better that you
find some more dental stone and make a thicker tool. Thanks for the
commnets on using the method at my website.  Just remember that you are
done with the iron cap when you are about 80% of the depth and
approximately spherical in shape.
Dental stone/tile tools can start being used as soon as 1/2 hour after they are cast.
