Hi Orlando.
We both know that NT compares badly to Novell as a basic File and Print
server. With a lot of Micro$oft software, the solution is to throw hardware
at the problem. As the margin on hardware is small, it needs to be really
big hardware to make anything, so it is nice for a consultant VAR or
whatever to tell the co that they have to replace all their machines -
Desktop Renewal!
This will attract a few flames, but Novell is no more stable than NT.
NetWare's advantage is that technical savvy people set it up. Once up and
running you can lock it in a cupboard and no one will be tempted to meddle
with it. It is too easy for non-server software to be installed on an NT
box, leading to DLL hell, wrong versions of ODBC, blue screens etc. People
think they know the operating system because they used Win 9x in college!
No one meddles (read F&*%s) with a Novell Server - so their afraid of it!
This is also why there is so much interest in locking down NT.
Companies think because of the salaries of CNE's (or Unix bods, DBA's etc)
that it's cheaper to employ MCP's or enthusiastic amateurs. However with
the number of NT rebuilds, software upgrades, baroque features, they end up
employing more.
Come the revolution (Y2K) those technicians that know how to recover without
rebuilding are the ones who can save that corporate mission critical
database.
My advice would be to become a MCSE+I. Look first at what you already know,
and get certified in it, regardless of vendor, then hit the books for the
rest. Forums at http://www.winntmag.com and http://www.mcpmag.com can keep
you enthused!
Best of luck,
Joseph
