According to https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/linux/kernel/building.md
both raspi 2 and 3 use bcm2709 in the configuration.  I am assuming that it is
a 32 bit given that there are no additional configuration for raspi 3.

The url answered half my question and at this writing am operating under the
assumption that pure 64 bit raspi 3's linux kernels are not yet doable. 
Personally I am in no rush to see that happen and am satisfied now that I have
found a link to kernel compilation for raspi's.  Given what I read there I will
patiently wait for a suitable arm64 platform before betting excighted about
them.  :-)
