subject: Serious Comm Tests

Hi Bud!:
 BJ> Switching equipment makes SOME difference, but to really
 BJ> do any kind of serious test, you MUST know where on the
 BJ> local loop each machine you're calling is.
I admit I don't know my location within a subscriber loop;
I do however, know which switching office I'm in and its
physical location.
 BJ> I'm near the END of a local loop. I can call systems
 BJ> close to me (2 to 4 blocks), also near the end of their
 BJ> local loop, and get 16.8k connects. But I can call 30 miles
 BJ> away, a system that's near the beginning of their local loop,
 BJ> and get a 33.6k connect almost every time.
Does one need to be an experienced outside plant person to know
the above?
I think for most folks there are just too many variables to deal
with on the twisted wire PSTN. The sooner we can all afford
broadband cable &/or satellite the better!
