Try this.  Hack your existing XF86Config file.  On RH, it lives in
/etc/X11.  I think it is the same for Mandrake, but I'm not positive.

In the "Screen Section" of your config you should find a line
beginning with "Modes."  Using an editor (as root) or vi or
whatever, remove the modes you don't want for the monitor.  1024x768 and
above I guess.

In the same part of the screen section you should see a line that begins
with Depth.  Change that to 16 if 24 doesn't work.

Make a backup of the config file before you begin, of course.
