You may be right ... I've had several peavey amps that I used for monitors 
and yeah they all seemed to hum a little when I used them that way .. make 
sure that the monitor send out of the console is low z and that you are using 
the appropriate cable from the monitor amp input to the snake (tip, ring, 
sleeve)
using a single conductor and sheild won't cut it ...
