I went through two failed engagements before the one that stuck. And I was particularly careful before committing to the third, which did, after all, work out. Just about everybody (except my own family, they were still rooting for #2) was sure that we were "right" for each other, and considered it a done deal LONG before I was ready to agree that it really could work this time.
