You can use USB hard drives for storage, you just need to power them via their
own PSU or an external hub with power as you listed.

There are several setups which use the SD for /boot and startup... and then
/home is on the HD...

There are a few variants of this I've seen.. I don't use them, YET.. as for
what I use the PI's for the SD is fine.
