My experience differs, and so would those using various Pi2/Pi2B/Pi2+/Pi3 as TV
playback boxes for all sorts of media at 720p & 1080p

Did you get the hardware codex support enabled??

I've found it makes quite the suitable replacement for the bog standard web
browser/email/word processing tasks including video playback.

If you want video playback you need the hardware decoder thats on the SoC.
