Whoa! My computer took a 3
0 second look at your message and demanded I reply. I have to wear a smurf
suit (the wife thinks they look stupid) or golf suit and grey slacks because
of my beard. By the way, if you fly, paint your
aircraft flourescent orange. The helicopter we had a couple of weeks ago was
grey and white and was laying in juniper and pinon with snow.
There is no better camoflauge. If the pilot hadn't been able to build a fire
we would still be looking for it. No ELT.
He was transporting an underpowered trainer over our foothills (about 8000'
and hit an updraft going over a ridge and had nothing under his rotor to hold
him up on the other side. He landed on a plateau in the fork of a drainage
and used his radio (which still worked) to report his position all over the
countryside. To add insult to injury, about the time we got in their area,
our new (used) 182 lost its alternator.
We progressively lost our stack. No more avionics. We were pulling our
headphones asside and yelling at each other and trying to use some handhelds
from out crash bags to communicate. It was a fun day.
