subject: My Avtek 14.4k is driving me crazy.

AW> I've been using a (borrowed) 14.4 Avtek MegaPlusFax v32.bis

AW> thingumaboab for a while now, and on the odd occasion it will

AW> not carry out a handshake properly. It starts its little song

AW> another - and then I hang up, because I really *hate* that

 AW> song now.

This noise is the modems trying to negotiate a common speed.

With a 14400 it starts at 14400 then drops down one notch to 12000,

has another go, then down to 9600, has another go, and so on.

The only reason it is trying lower speeds is that it decides that your

line is not good enough to sustain a connect at the one above.

(To much online noise/not a nice signal to noise ratio.

Reminds me of back on '91 '92, when most lines were not good enogh

 to do 14400.

AW> [Oh dear. The moosehead just started cackling.]

Send your moosehead to the telecommunications Omnbudsman and see

if he can put up with being laughed at for long.

AW> Also - I can download stuff, with extreme prejudice - but try

AW> uploading and I get an unsatisfactory amount of errors. I'm

AW> using Telemate 4.1.*cough* and I receive with Szmodem.

 This leans towards "Flow Control"

Both your modem and you software MUST be set to Hardware flow control

 NOT SOFTWARE flow control.

Talk to telstra about line noise.

Moose be going, bye

Russell
