Hm, well, you should be prepared for its return on real modern machines. ;)
As far as i remember EFI boot is done via EFI System Partition (ESP), which is
FAT style by UEFI standard.
I played with it some time ago, when a 4TB HDD was available for testing. I
ended up with ESP, boot, NTFS and ext4 partitions on the disk, together with
grub for bootmenu.
It should be possible to merge ESP and boot partitions into one. But i failed
to do so, maybe i got the wrong config parameter for grub.
