From what I've heard, another way of foiling those nasty little beasties is
similar, but a little cheaper...
Make a paper collar out of cardboard, or cut the bottom out of a paper cup.
Make sure the collar goes at least one inch into the ground and is one inch
high around the base of the plant. My information says that lettuces and
other vegetables are especially vulnerable, but anything that grows a woody
stem shouldn't be...then again, we all know how contrary bugs can be. :(
