I agree with you.  I just love the Disney cartoons, but this one made
my eyes go wide a few times!  Especially the scene you mentioned about
the fireplace, and when the same guy smells Esmeralda's hair.  I never
expected that from a "family" movie.  It was a bit too dark for my
taste.  The gargoyles were funny, and Quasimodo was sweet, but it
was still too much.
