Hello Perry,

The message is difficult to know without actually being at your file
server, but I'll take a guess at what may be the problem. The problem may
be that you do not have a sufficient memory buffers below 16 meg reserved.
That is, the controller card to which the tape drive is attached may be an
older
16bit ISA type of card, or even if it is an EISA or PCI based card, it still
may need to use memory below the first 16 meg. Thus, despite having
so much RAM in your system, a certain amount needs to be reserved
in the 1st 16Meg of RAM. To correct your problem, you need to add:

SET RESERVED MEMORY BUFFERS BELOW 16 MEG = 250

into your STARTUP.NCF FILE.

In addition, you did not mention if your server is EISA/PCI bus, or ISA/PCI
bus.
In the case of ISA/PCI bus, all memory above 16 Meg is not automatically
registered, and you need to add the amount of RAM in your machine into
AUTOEXEC.NCF. The syntax would be as follows:

REGISTER MEMORY ABOVE 16 MEG=YES

REGISTER MEMORY 1000000 1000000 (to register 32 meg)

REGISTER MEMORY 1000000 2000000 (to register 64 meg)
and so on
with 1million represting in hex memory above the first 16. Your Novell 3.12
book can give you examples. The formula is: (mem above 16)/16=N
N-1 to 10to 6th power is second number.

Thus, in our first example, 32 meg is 16 Meg more than 16, or 32/16=2
thus 2-1=1 , or 1x10^6 power is 2nd value.

In second example, 64 Meg is 64/16=3, so 3-1=2, so 2*10^6 is second value.

In your case 264 Meg is really 256 Meg.

Thus, 256/16=16, so 16-1=15. Thus, to register all memory, your syntax
would be

REGISTER MEMORY 1000000 TO 15000000 to register all 256 Meg.

The other posibility, is you need to download the latest 312pt6 patch from
Novell
web site. Among a lot of things it does, is it loads a new LOADER.EXE
which will replace your current SERVER.EXE with a newer one, and as a result,
the new SERVER.EXE will better recognize the PCI bus of your machine, and
be better equipped to handle interrups and memory addressing of the PCI bus.

Thus, you have one of 3 possibilities:

a) not enough memory reserved buffers below first 16 Meg
b) Not all system memory is fully registered (check with monitor screen if it
is)
c) you're running an older server.exe that needs to be patched to talk properly
to PCI bus.

Hope I've steered you right. Please check my math.

                                        Sincerely,

                                            Alex G.
