I've had another model of Dell Inspiron at work and I'd say it is best to avoid
them for Linux.

I do not know about Compaq/HP, but I am sure that you can find tons of
information on google.

If you are going to get a laptop with an Athlon 64 CPU, you will most probably
need to use ndiswrapper with the windows 64 bit drivers for the integrated
wireless.

I've managed to get everything working on my Compaq R3440CA except the 5-in-1
card reader.
