I think there's some good design in the components of DirectShow. The OSS
video codecs I've looked at seem to support building against the MS
libraries to produce DirectShow components. And then anybody can use them
from any app. Which is nice.

There are the really cheap Brooktree based cards, and then there's more
expensive stuff. I'm not sure what the difference is. I like minimal
hardware.

However you should probably be looking at a DVD recorder. Appliantology....

Now that sounds like fun. Is it two way? Where does it come from? Did it
