subject: faulty modem

Hi Richard,

RS> I have a GVC 33.6 modem which is only a week old it seems to work
RS> fine though I have limited experience with high speed modems.

RS> The problem is it smells. It has a burning smell to it, and under
RS> scrutiny I found the Rockwell Chip
 RS> "RC288DPI R6682-26" has a hole in it. v this is
 RS> where the ---*----
 RS> hole is. | RW |

RS> Is this normal for Rockwell chips?

There shouldn't be a hole, and it shouldn't smell like it's burning. Are
you using the power supply that came with the modem?
You should get this replaced if it smells like it's burning.
