Yes, exactly.  With cheaper modems it requires a much better link to
achieve the same performance.  Hardly any surprises there.

Yes, that's about what you'd expect in 'perfect' conditions.

The problem is not everyone can live right next door to their exchange, so
33600 connects all the time are simply an unrealistic expectation for most
people, given current technology.  No carrier will guarantee half that
rate.

It's a huge country, you know, and Telstra (we Australians) haven't
anything like the capital to double our installed telecommunication base
built over the decades from $50Bn or so to $100Bn or so - now have we? 
Even if we could, plenty of people would still be further, many much
further away from their exchanges than the Km or so needed for the current
definition of 'perfect'.

Russell, you know damn well promoting or deprecating one carrier over
another is and remains off-topic for AUST_MODEM.  Might as well argue
different footy codes, Holdens versus Falcons, or operating systems; these
always turns into useless 'Coke versus Pepsi' arguments.  Please, no.  Take
it to an appropriate echo, if there is one.
