hello mike I am far from a linux guru, but I have spent alot of time lately
installing linux on my laptop, A *Gateway mx7118* I tried alot of
flavors and the easiest one i found is mandrake(or mandriva)10.1
2005 limited edition. my laptop is an AMD 64 which probably limited
my choices. it is also a dual boot system with xp media center.

just remember to back up your data before trying to install using
norton ghost or equivilent. I am really glad I did, otherwise I would
have scrapped my HD.

if I had to do it over I would have got a laptop with linux already on it
just because of my inexperience in setting linux up. in my experience
I have had better luck installing linux to true pentium computers
not celeron based, but that is just me. anyways good luck with
your *project* :)
