True, it does not serve a purpose any more. But for backward compatibility we
can not just put anything there. Many nodelist processing sofware will barf if
theer are jyst two adjacent commas. Or something that is not an integer. And as
it serves no purpose, it does not hurt to check for "funny" input and replace
it with "9600" does it?

The Baud rate field DID serve a purpose in the very early days when there were
modems without buffers and RTS/CTS handshake. They required that the DCE/DTE
speed was set to the same value as the line speed.
