Real Fido? There are several possible hierarchies. There's
the "fido.*" set (with a "fido.ger.*" subset), a "fido7.*" set
(with various subsets like "fido7.kharkov.*" and "fido7.kiev.*"
"fido7.ru.*"), and loads of other newsgroups with "fido" in
the name. Most of them seem empty at the places I've checked,
though. You need to check out free news servers. They're
 listed at places like
and , and can have anywhere
from a few dozen to over 70,000 newsgroups.

Depends what you're comparing to. Britain has free internet as
a result of price wars gone to extremes. Other places have free
access if you use programs that keep ads on part of the screen
all the time. General access in the US is around $18/month
unlimited these days, but you can get it as cheap as $8 or as
high as $40 depending on what you want to pay.
