Replying to a message of TIM RICHARDSON to MARK LEWIS: TR> On 05-29-10, MARK LEWIS said to TIM RICHARDSON: TR>> I'm having a hard time squaring your `crippled for LIFE' claim with TR>> you kicking in someone's door to illegally enter their dwelling. How TR>> did you manage to `kick in the door' in your crippled for LIFE TR>> condition? ML>> apparently you don't know any ambulatory cripples, tim... one of my ML>> best friends is a cripple thanks to someone else's stupidity... yet, ML>> my friend doesn't have to take any medications for his problem nor ML>> is he bedridden or wheelchair bound... in fact, he can walk and run ML>> and climb pretty much just like anyone else who isn't crippled... ML>> his prosthetic leg isn't even noticible unless he in shorts... TR> Then he is *not* cripple! ML>> there are many folk who are crippled and deal with pain on a daily ML>> basis who can and do still get up and do what they can... sure, it ML>> may hurt while doing it but they can and do do it anyway... ML>> afterwards, then they deal with the pain how they have to... TR> Then they are *not* cripples! TR> *Cripple* isn't just a physical condition......it is a state of mind! I can agree with that. One example that comes to mind is Alan Hess - I never thought of him as being crippled, even though he posted that he was in fact a quadriplegic and suffered from chronic pain syndrome (I've no idea whether or not either is true - and I don't care - but I assume truthfulness unless/until something disproves it). My mother is another example. She contracted polio in 1948, spent 3 years in a hospital (one of them in an iron lung) and the rest of her life in a wheelchair (she could walk with braces and crutches - and help if outside). She managed to raise three kids (one of which was born in 1951), keep the house clean and do the cooking and laundry. Unfortunately, after about 1959 - and especially after 1964 - she pretty much retreated into the house and seldom left it; she wouldn't go into a public restaurant, store, mall or other similar venue. IMO she *became* a cripple long after the physical disability occurred. --- FleetStreet 1.19+* Origin: Bob's Boneyard, Emerson, Iowa (1:300/3) SEEN-BY: 3/0 633/267 640/954 712/0 313 550 848 @PATH: 2905/3 116/901 3634/12 123/500 261/38 712/848 633/267 |
