>JM - Steven, there are six main "sex" scenes, and constant
talk and mentio=
n
of the act, in NATURE OF THE BEAST (no initial "THE," please).
Of course. The problem with the "Nature of the Beast" (no
initial "the" in= side the quotation
marks, but outside, I'll use the definite article as I please) was that I
s= tarted to read it,
but got tired clicking through all the chapters to get to where I had left
= off. I suggested an
index page, and lo and behold it appeared. Some time later, I read more,
b= ut soon realized
that I missed some chapters, so I've started from the beginning. Therefore=
, the first sex
scene sticks in my mind (as does the "equinoid" species doing the
evil deed=
). I should
read it all the way through, but I have to limit my intake. It's not the
p= rose, it's white text
on a black background. I'm reading "Dark Horizon" too, so I'm
getting a do= uble whammy
of that white text on black background bit (oh, for Gary's nice peach
backg= round or good
old white).
Perhaps I should read the "Cotillion" and see what the fuss is about.
As for sex and Star Trek, yeah, sex is a part of the human experience, but
= I just would
feel uncomfortable taking my characters and describing in detail a sexual
e= ncounter.
I did this once, in 1979 in a story called "The Other Side of the
Galaxy" (= a ship preimagines
Voyager and goes to the Delta Quadrant, and anticipating that they would
ne= ver return, well,
things happen and two members of the crew get carried away). The sex scene=
did not fit in,
and even now, I get a little unsettled reading it (although the description=
is rather tame).
It just doesn't seem like a part of Trek, so in "Pursuit or
Capture," I am = still uncertain how
far to go in the scene between Matsubara and Thorpe. I like Garry's idea
o= f stepping over
"closing the door" to the "aftermath" scene. Anyway,
it's not as if I'm sq= ueamish about
sex or anything. I've written lots of sex scenes in other stories, because=
it seems like
the kind of thing people in rock bands do, and in some other stories
writte= n mostly in the
80's. Maybe that's why I kind of glossed over in my mind the other sex
sce= nes in the
"Nature of the Beast," and focused on the initial scene because
it was basi= cally a rape
scene.
I don't anticipate writing sex scenes in my stories, but if they're there,
= I'll read them and
decide myself if they fit into the story or not. Of course, I do have
Hiro= shi Matsubara
of the "Alexandria" stories and his hobby of bedding down alien
women, but = even there,
I don't think I'd describe in detail his encounters. If any character in
S= teve-Trek could
get the erotica treatment, it would be him, since that has become his
reput= ation. By
the way, if anything, Matsubara is underendowed.
