I think gentoo is currently using gcc-4.0.2 and it'll be easy to tell on
the commandline with 'gcc --version'.  I have that version here and managed
to compile the latest husky stuff with it.  Even did it as a user rather
then root so that it wouldn't end up as part of the system.  A bit of a
hassel but doable.  I'd highly recommend that and use it that way until you
are happy with it.  Configuration is a real boar's nest to say the least.
