Try
(1) Removing smartdrive from your autoexec.bat or config.sys file
(2) Remove any unnecessary TSR's from your setup.
(3) Have you turned CTS/RTS on and XON/XOFF off?
(4) Does your serial port have a 16550 UART? Use MSD.EXE to find out.
(5) Go over your Telemate 4.1 config again.

I use Telemate 4.12 and find it runs very smoothly.
