The B-17 is great ammo to use on folks that talk about how expensive
and bug-ridden modern aircraft are. The first B-17 crashed during
tests, and the "no-nothings" in Congress were all set to can the
project because -=THEY=- knew that the aircraft was far to advanced
and complex to be flown by an "ordinary" Army Air Corps crew.
Little did they know that in a very short time, that airplane would
be flown by kids right out of high school, and log a record of
success that still amazes historians...
The same can be said for Lockheed's P-38, and every other advanced
airframe that saw use during WWII...
