Hello Maurice!

MBSE supports UTF-8. It uses the libiconv (if that is the corcect name) for
character set conversions. It may still have some weak spots. When Michiel
Broek put this all in, there were very few who used utf-8 so cross testing
was probably not possible.
I found that there are occasional errors in cursor positioning, but that may
also be caused by linking to the wrong cursor library on my side.
To your dismay you will find that he relys in the CHARS kludge. Buit it
should be possible to change that is a more heuristic approach.
I have tried the latter quite successfully in a Python experiment.
Vince Coen is the current guardian of the source code and I know Andrew Leary
is currently working on improovements on some options in MBSE.
I have MBSE running on a RaspberryPi, but it is currently not accessible from
the outside world.
