Here is some weird, way-out thinking....    If a lens is of sufficiently low
power, it won't have much in the way of abberations because it will be very
thin.   I used to experiment with millimeter wave lenses made of spots of
metal embedded in styrofoam.   We found that we could build up several
layers, and the alignment of those layers did not matter much.   So, if it
works for mm waves, wny not for sub-micron (but not subspace) waves?
