| subject: | Dynalink 1414H RPI modem |
I was given the unfortunate task of fixing a client's PC yesterday so that
he would be able to connect up to the Internet. The software configuration
part presented me with no problems, but upon opening the PC's case, I
discovered a Dynalink Cardmodemlite 1414H.
I was having all sorts of problems establishing a solid connection using
this modem. The modem would do 14400 bps with no problem, but there was no
error correction. The chip reads as follows:
RC144ATF-P
R6680-17
(C) ROCKWELL 93
9518 A69212-2
MEXICO
A call to Dynalink's techncial support revealed that the modem is not
supported by Dynalink, and tha I would have to call Modem Superstore in
Concord, NSW.
I fed my story to a helpful technician, who then informed me that what I
was dealing with was an RPI modem. Ugh! Software driven. No hardware-based
error correction, no hardware-based data compression, and probably no
hardware-based flow control either. AT&V revealed the profile, but a
message also appeared stating that NVRAM may be corrupted or not installed.
Has anyone ever dealt with one of these modems before? Anyone ever dealt
with any other RPI modems? My dealings with this particular modem make me
glad that modern modems come with online help! (I had no manual.)
