I've been living in California for about 13 years now.  A few years ago you 
could cheat your way though the test by tipping the mech.  Fines are so high 
now it isn't worth the risk any more.  In short, there isn't any way to beat 
it.  Replace your egr valve and clean out the port real well.  Replace the 
air filter, and fine tune your engine the best you can.  If it misses, 
chances are it will fail.
