subject: Optima V.34 VS Low Baud Modems

Hello Everyone! I'd like to pose this question to the Support
Team at Hayes for some of my clients who have low baud modems as well
as the users on one of our local BBS.
Back in March of 96, our local BBS system installed a set of 3
Hayes Optima V.34 Modems. The modems worked flawlessly until June
when the low baud users as well as high speed users lacking error
correction began to notice a significant rise in the failure rate of
Zmodem and other transfers. Personally I use a Best Data 2400 Internal,
on an Epson 8088, and I noticed BPS rates dropping from 238 to 220-200,
and in some cases a 10K file took 45 minutes to DL! Xmodem and Y modem
transfers faired equally, with failed Y-modem transfers being a daily
occurance.
Line noise doesn't seem to be an issue mainly because there
was no corresponding degradation of BBS operation or menu display
(Eg. Extra characters, Etc.) immediately prior to or after the
transfers. The lines are business quality and actively monitored
by Bell South. High speed users with Error correcting modems from 14.4
and up are NOT experiencing this problem at all.
Question, how does the Error Correction routines in the Optima
modems effect the data stream? Is it forced off on low speed connects,
or are the low speed modems at the mercy of the error correction when
trying to tranfer files? Could Compression routines like MNP5 be
responsible for this, and if so what solutions are possible beside
turning off the MNP5 or telling the Low speed users to replace
their modems?
        Thanks for the time!
                Christopher Tarana
