Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't squish already do this?
 
I distinctly remember setting *something* up 10 years ago that would handle
automagic area adding.. although it may have been something to add them and
force a rescan of .bad packets.
 
This would've been under Max 2.01wb / Squish 1.01(?)
