>> minor correction... the alt.* groups are unmoderated...

 WG> There are also non-alt.* which are unmoderated. In fact, most
 WG> groups are unmoderated, although "reactive moderation" is
 WG> possible in Usenet (sending of Control: cancel messages).

ummm, we're talking about usenet... the real usenet... not that
conglomeration of all newsgroups on all servers... usenet is made up of
only 9 top level hierarchies... alt.* plus the "usenet 8"...

    * alt - alternative, popular topics
    * comp - computer science subjects
    * humanities - humanities subjects
    * misc - miscellaneous groups
    * news - news topics
    * rec - recreational subjects
    * sci - science topics
    * soc - sociological subjects
    * talk - controversial topics

 WG> The biggest difference between the alt.* and non-alt.*
 WG> hiearchy is ease of Control: newgroup

that's a misnomer... everyone has access to the control group... some just
have more access than others... some even know how to cancel other's posts
without "proper authorization"... some of us have been around on
the 'net for as long as fidonet has been around :wink:
