Check with your phone company ... I use a service from Southwestern 
Bell that costs about $6 a month ....but all the answering machine 
problems I went through, that's a small price.
 
Since I have one phone line, if I'm on the computer, the Call Notes 
kicks in and I don't lose any calls.  You're notified of a call when 
you pick up the receiver and there's an intermittent beep.
 
You might want to check it out.   It seems infallible.
