As the partition is trashed, I can't reset the format.  Or, I don't 
think I can...  That may be an option.

I'm running WIN programs from Ubuntu right now!   Of course, they 
are actually running on the XP box I'm VMCed into.  :)

Does that destroy data?  

The problem with the damaged drive is the MBR is trashed.
